Rethinking NLP Techniques For Use In Business

(When The Context Changes, So Does How You Use the Technology.)

Tom O'Connor

A common mistake students of NLP make is assuming that the NLP that they learned in the traditional NLP certification trainings (which are typically focused on therapeutic goals) is the same NLP that they use in business and professional contexts.

It’s not.

The underlying technology is the same but how you apply it and use it in the business world is vastly different.

Different…

…context

…desired outcomes

…constraints

…needs

Requires different methods.

The simple fact is, in therapeutic and one on one change contexts, we are not constrained by the common expectations, practices and norms that are widespread in the business world.

If you work as a coach, hypnotist, or counsellor you can ask your client to:

“Close their eyes … listen to the sound of my voice while I want you to imagine yourself at the top of a large staircase and with each and every beat of your heart … you can imagine yourself slowly beginning to R-E-L-A-X as you gradually begin to walk down the stairs... NOW...”

And they won’t bat an eye-lid!

But if you bring that ‘hippy-dippy’ personal development stuff and overt hypnosis in the business world … well you’ll quickly find yourself directed out the nearest door.

Senior executives, professionals and team members (typically) don’t feel comfortable around that stuff.

In fact, in some quarters, NLP has a bad reputation and is met with suspicion by people who have heard of it.

So how do you translate what you know about NLP and apply it easily and elegantly in the business world?

That’s what Master Trainer Michael Breen is going to address in today’s video.

I’ve invited him to share how one of the most popular techniques in NLP – the Fast Phobia cure – is used extensively in by skilled NLP practitioners in the business world.

But it’s not used in the way you most likely have learned it.

In the meantime check, out How To Become A Better Problem Solver

which will teach you one of the most important questions to ask any time someone in business gives you a problem (or struggles to solve a problem themselves).

It’s almost always because they are assuming things that aren’t or can’t see what’s actually going on. Their thinking literally has boxed them in for seeing a solution.

This question is a great one to begin to unstick that.

Business is all about solving problems. The better you get at it, the quicker you will get recognised, respected and rewarded.

It all starts by learning to use the toolkit of NLP in a different way.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in high pressured consultancy engagements where teams have been in conflict or executives in disagreement about what approach to take…

…when the problem was easily solved by learning to ask a better question.

Try this question out for yourself.

Tom
