One day on a training many years ago a young student stood up and asked…
“Master, what is the greatest force in the human nature?”
The Master replied: “What do you think?”
The student replied: “Surely it is change.”
The Master laughed loudly.
“What’s the strongest force in the universe? It is the human desire to keep things the same.”
The field of self-help has done a great job of inventing stories that seem to explain why people don’t do what they need to.
Stories like:
“You’re not doing what you need to be doing because you are [choose your flavour]:
1) lazy
2) afraid of failure
3) afraid of succeeding
4) manifesting wrongly
And many more. Perhaps you have believed one or more about yourself.
But here’s the thing: Those stories are made up. They may seem to have a ring of truth but when one tries to inspect them more closely they turn to dust. Why? Because they are based on faulty assumptions about human behaviour.
Let’s step back for a moment:
Whatever outcomes you and I want to achieve in the world, they occur through action, right?
So if you are not taking a specific action you want (or know to be good for you) the question becomes:
“What would need to happen to make taking that action the appealing thing to do?”
Notice how this is a completely different question than the one most people ask which is:
“What is wrong with me?” ….which leads to poor self-judgement.
To answer the 1st question – we need to follow the white rabbit down the rabbit hole … to jump in time to the sequences of activities that happen before an action response is triggered and ask:
How are you using your ATTENTION?
Let’s drop in on a conversion with Master Trainer Michael Breen on the importance of how we use our attention to create behaviours.
Enjoy!
Start today to recover more awareness today.
In any situation you find yourself challenged, frustrated or stuck, begin to notice how have you arranged your attention?
Then ask what experience do you want instead?
The qualities of the world that come to your attention are determined by the attention you bring to the experience and values and filters you have habituated to using.
These aren’t fixed. They can all be changed.
