When world-renowned Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck’s work on fixed vs growth mindset dropped, it upended the popular belief that our basic abilities are inborn and do not change over time.
As Carol highlighted: “the view you adopt of yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life.”
Then Harvard psychologist Dr. Daniel Gilbert came along and dropped an even bigger thought bomb that has huge implications on your long-term success and ability to set and achieve your goals.
Watch him explain his big idea here:
People who set and achieve their goals predictably and consistently have learned to intentionally direct their future self.
It’s another secret of how highly successful people turn red and orange lights into green.
They don’t just hope they’ll achieve their goals.
The jump forward in time and reconfigure their future!
Case Example: In the early days of NLP, a young bright student by the name of Tony Robbins got the attention of his peers for rewriting his personal history and creating his future history – going to great lengths to do so.
He mentally would imagine his future self long before any of it had ever happened.
You don’t need to wait till the future comes to decide if you will like it.
You can take control of your future self today.
And when you do, a whole new way of life and achieving goals becomes possible. In fact, whenever I work with clients one-on-one, I always ensure their future is far brighter than their past. Their future literally pulls them forward.
And because they already see and feel it as having happened, they find it much, much easier to take the actions they want today, to create the future they’ve planned for tomorrow.
So take a moment to reflect on this:
Do you tend to live as if the person you are today is the person you will always be?
If so, how’s that thought holding you back?
When you think of creating a far better life than you have right now, do you find yourself saying or thinking:
“I can’t imagine that.”
If so, have you ever considered what that’s costing you?
So long as you hold this bias, without even realising it, you’ve placed a great big WALL in your mind which you’ll struggle to get over no matter how many attempts you make or how much you say you want, wish or hope for your goals to be achieved.
Take the easy path.
Learn to turn red lights into green in 2021.
Stay tuned for more insights on how to do this next week.
To your success,
Tom
