Whenever a wizard of influence tells a story, some really amazing things happen that you probably don’t realise:
Within seconds of the start of the story, the brain activity between the storyteller and the listener synchronises. The more engaging the story, the more synchronised their brain activity.
As the storyteller opens up the story, we get pulled in. Our brains make pictures. We start to create a model of the story world we are hearing.
We being to respond AS-IF it is happening right now.
We lose our sense of time and space. We get transported into the story. Our brains try to anticipate where the story is going. We jump ahead to try and fill in the gaps for what we are hearing and seeing.
The cognitive function that can be easily threatened, relaxes. It’s story time...
Each new twist and turn, creates more unanswered questions. Our brains try to track where the story is going, we try to make sense - and fill in the answers before we’ve heard them.
This is where the wizard gets crafty…
They don’t tell you what to think. They don’t need to. In fact, telling you directly what to think or do is usually counter-productive, especially when it could be seen as a threat.
Instead, they present specific ideas within a story where you and I, following the natural prediction process of our brains, will validate what they said.
We’ll make the pictures.
We’ll see the examples.
We’ll follow the logical implications the storyteller setup in the story. The crumbs that lead to the conclusions they want us to have.
So long as the chain of causes in the story is coherent (from within the story structure) it will FEEL compelling and be believable.
We’ll jump ahead and convince ourselves!
And the best bit, the conclusions the wizard wants us to have can be setup without the us realising it. In fact, we will think it was us who came to that conclusion.
Because we did!
(Just not without an invisible hand guiding us.)
Super powerful, right? Here's the thing, each new story creates another opportunity to get us to validate the conclusions the master influencer would like us to make...
...until we no longer question it.
